With all of the Web 2.0 sites out there today, it’s hard to find the true gems, there are just so many new sites. But the moment I stumbled on The Sixty One, I knew I had found a site that truly brings together the best attributes of some popular websites, serving them up with style, and a clear mission - “to give musicians and listeners a fair shake”.

Primarily written in Python and Flash Action Script, this site provides a truly entertaining and unique user experience. The user interface is well thought out and very simple. The voting system (they call bumps) allows you to help an artist make it to the front page. You can also earn points by listening to music, referring your friends, signing in every day, litening to “the rack”, or bumping a story that makes it to the front page. These points can then be used to bump additonal music you’ve enjoyed, encouraging you to be an active member on the site.

It might sound a bit complicated at first, but it is really quite easy to use and is a great way to find new music. The site is free, but aims to make money from ads, referrels when you buy a DRM free song from itunes, and from donations.

Check it out: www.thesixtyone.com (I get points to use if you sign up!)

All you need is a Windows machine with a fast processor, an HD-DVD drive, a Blu-Ray burner, 30GB of free disk space, at least, though 40GB or more is recommended and an internet connection to download the software!

Wired has the process here.

I get asked this question a lot, and the answer is NO, for the majority of people. Of course, if you write music, have a flash video, etc, it’s o.k., as long as the viewer can 1. Turn it off or skip it, and 2. It doesn’t play that long. Unless you are going to put your whole album in a loop and give people pause, fast forward, and rewind capabilities, I say, leave it off.

Here are a few reasons why.

Your audience might be listening to music already

It doesn’t really add much to the experience. Do you feel like your missing out on something at ebay because they don’t have music playing?

A lot of people could be at work, and a shot of AC/DC could get them in trouble, discouraging them from visiting your site again

It’s a little cheesy.

It’s kind of like hold music when you call an automated phone system; it just isn’t great. Take a look at any of the top 100 websites, do they have music playing on their homepage? Most don’t, if any actually do. It’s not a best practice of top websites, and even though it works for Myspace pages, it doesn’t work for most professional business websites.

I recently had a hard drive crash, so I upgraded my Macbook to Leopard and reinstalled Boot Camp and Windows XP. Here are a couple tweaks I came accross to get everything working right again.

If you are using a Apple keyboard, XP installs the drivers for it no problem, but by default numlock is turned off and there is no numlock button on the keyboard. Just hit the clear button instead!

Apple wants you to use your leopard CD to install your drivers, but if you don’t have it available, use utorrent and download a copy of Bootcamp 1.4, which has everything ready to go for you.
